Things I Wish I Knew When I Started ASUPD

By Ysrael Hernandez

This post would have helped when I was going into school because there was such a dramatic shift from a.) going from middle school to high school, and b.) going to a different school. After a few weeks, I started to understand how everything worked, but there were still some things that did not make sense at all. It took me a lot longer to figure out those things, but I’m here to share that knowledge with you.

I started getting the hang of it until I came to my assignments, specifically in English. In my first semester, I took honors English and was suddenly dumped with a bunch of assignments. So one thing would definitely be: make sure you know if you really want to do honors classes.

Another thing would be to make sure you know how to do MLA format. Whether you are writing a letter or citing sources, you need to know the MLA format. My first English assignment came back with a very low grade because I didn’t do the MLA format. In high school English, or when citing sources in almost every class, you’ll need the MLA format. If you need help with MLA, make sure to ask your teacher because it is very confusing how it works.

Finally, DBAs. I knew from the student orientation what to expect, but it was still nerve-wracking the first time getting a phone call. Thankfully, the teachers are nice and very helpful, so you don’t need to worry about getting a phone call. The DBAs are generally easy, just talking with your teacher about assignments you’ve done in class. Sometimes, like in math, you’ll need to explain some formulas, but as long as you’ve got them memorized, you’ve got it in the bag.
