I took Math 170, also known as Precalculus, in person during the summer at ASU this year. Dr.
Frank Arthur was the teacher, but we had many teacher assistants to help us. The class was a
six-week class on the actual college campus that was an accelerated course. It was just
Precalculus, but what made it great was all the support we got. We had lectures at the beginning
of the class, and after lunch, we would get to do either practice problems or quizzes. I really
liked how I got to meet different people from all over Arizona and how the tests I took allowed
me to work on time management. This meant I became faster at math due to a time limit. Plus, I
got to stay at a dorm with a roommate, which was a lot of fun.
I think that this was very good because it allowed me to socialize with other people and make
friends, something hard to do in online school. It also taught me about college life and things to
do on campus. Both of these are very important because they help prepare teenagers to become
adults and teach responsibilities. Take, for example, my mom wasn’t there to tell me what to do
or keep me on track. So, instead, I had to force myself to put in extra effort to do well. Situations
where parents are more hands-off while showing college life are very important and help kids
learn and grow. Since ASU offers multiple courses like this, it would be great if more people
knew about these amazing and helpful opportunities.
