Creativity in Your Classwork: How to Motivate Yourself

By Taegan Hardy

Quick! What’s your current favorite piece of media? For me, I love Formula 1. Now, I set a timer, play a driver’s hype music, and open my math homework. In my mind, I’m now an engineer, and I have to solve a certain number of problems before the timer is up in order to get our team’s car successfully working for the race. Fun, right? This is the technique that works best for me when I’m trying to get schoolwork done.

Romanticizing my work has always been fun, especially as an online student. Today I’m focusing on English. I put on a little bit of dark eye makeup, play Jeff Buckley, and imagine I’m a writer in the ’90s. This helps me get through my work as quickly as I can. Centering my day around a specific vibe can make my work so much more fun, even when I’m not particularly interested in the topic. Today I get to be an artist, tomorrow a poet, the next day a biologist, and so on. There’s no limit to your imagination.

Your motivation can be plenty of things. For example, your dream job. Every piece of work you do right now is one step closer to your future life. Another tactic you can use is a reward system. If you finish a specific task, you get to watch the newest episode of your favorite show. During my French study days, every time I completed one assignment, I got to read one more chapter of a book I was hooked on.

These strategies can help take your studying from a boring workday to a scene straight out of a movie. I hope these tactics can benefit you in your future homework endeavors!
