Supercharge Reading Instruction

The Science of Reading Program was designed by ASU to satisfy Arizona’s Literacy Endorsement requirement for K–5 teachers.

While there is time to prepare for state certification, students can’t wait. This program will share expert strategies and science-backed practices teachers can use now to support emerging readers.

The Future of Reading

The program is designed to provide Science of Reading training for K–5 teachers while fully preparing them for the Foundations of Reading exam by Pearson. Along the way, teachers will earn Professional Development credit and receive ongoing learning and support.

Teachers enrolled in the program will get:

  • 45 hours of PD credit for Part A and/or 45 hours of PD credit for Part B
  • Test prep for Literacy Endorsement certification
  • Engaging and interactive Zoom sessions
  • Science-backed classroom reading strategies
  • Complimentary Science of Reading digital course

Engaging and Interactive Sessions

Our structure for Part A of the Literacy Endorsement includes collaborative sessions to help teachers gain a deeper understanding of the Science of Reading’s strategies for teaching foundational skills and supporting emergent readers. Session topics include:

  1. Introduction to The Science of Reading
  2. Phonological Awareness and the Alphabetic Principle
  3. Words
  4. Scaffolding Instruction and Assessment
  5. Dyslexia and Multi-sensory Instruction
  6. Fluency and Comprehension
  7. Vocabulary and Background Knowledge
  8. Literacy Knowledge and Language Structure
  9. Verbal Reasoning and Closure

Our structure for Part B of the Literacy Endorsement includes collaborative sessions to help teachers gain a deeper understanding of designing instructional practices that create proficient readers. Session topics include:

  1. The Science of Reading and Structured Literacy
  2. Systematic Instruction
  3. Explicit Instruction
  4. Assessment
  5. Multi-sensory
  6. Struggling Readers
  7. Planning Intervention
  8. Phonological Awareness
  9. Phonics/Word Study/Spelling
